MARK THE MOMENT

Spring 2008

This lovely, sweet, simple story reminds us why we take the time to mark the moment. Little things can make a difference in quality of life and lightening the heart filling it with smiles.

EQUINE WELCOME

Lisa went with a barn acquaintance, Susan, to another facility in the area to look at a horse that was for sale. They spent the day watching the owner ride the horse. Susan, the buyer, rode the horse as well. Her trainer came along to watch the movement, assess the temperament and also ride the horse. It was a serious day of evaluation as this was a big decision for Susan. Once a decision has been made to purchase the horse, the price decided upon, then the veterinarian makes an inspection of the physical health of the animal. It's a long process designed to help the buyer make a good choice.

Susan decided to buy the horse and finished the process. The day finally arrived when the horse, which was being shipped via horse trailer to the new facility, would turn up. The trainer was out of town and the barn was quiet. Lisa suddenly knew that she needed to be there with Susan when the horse arrived. Many reasons prompted her to make this decision. Sometimes a horse can be spooky and upset when arriving at a new place and it is helpful to have another person available. Susan's excitement could be shared, as this was a big moment for her. Since Lisa had been in on the visitation process to chose the horse, she thought she wanted to follow up. She took her video camera and a still camera to the barn. She also brought a split of champagne and two fluted glasses for a celebration toast. These are small items - showing up, bringing the cameras and a little celebration drink - but they were large in Susan's eyes.

What warmed my heart was when Lisa said to me later "Now I know what you mean by marking the moment." Lisa had gone out of her way to make this day special for Susan. In doing so, Lisa had also felt good and made a lasting bonding experience with Susan and the horse.
Keep your eyes open for the little and unexpected times where you can intentionally make a difference for a person or an animal friend in your life. It doesn't have to be fancy, but planned from the heart.
